Abstract
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder affecting millions globally. Periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) and dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) have shown promise beyond dental tissue regeneration, potentially offering therapeutic benefits for neurodegenerative disorders such as AD. This scoping review aimed to map the global evidence on the therapeutic effects of PDLSC and DPSC on AD, following the JBI methodology and Arksey and O’Malley’s 2005 framework. Studies focused on PDLSC and DPSC in AD were included, excluding opinion papers and review articles. Comprehensive searches in PubMed, Web of Science, and SCOPUS up to October 30, 2024, yielded relevant studies, which were collated and managed using ENDNOTE 20. Data were extracted using online tool. The review aggregates current evidence on the therapeutic effects and mechanisms of PDLSC and DPSC in AD treatment, highlighting potential benefits and identifying literature gaps. Despite promising findings, further research is necessary to substantiate these benefits. The review also suggests conceptual and methodological strategies for future studies to address limitations and clarify the roles of these stem cells in AD treatment.
